The Presidency has rejected allegations by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that his life is under threat, describing the claims as false and politically motivated.
In its response, the Presidency insisted that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation, and dismissed suggestions that any state institution was involved in acts of intimidation against opposition figures.
Officials maintained that Nigeria’s security agencies operate within the confines of the law and are mandated to safeguard every citizen without discrimination. They urged the public to disregard what they described as unsubstantiated allegations capable of creating unnecessary tension and misleading public opinion.
The Presidency further stated that political discourse should be guided by facts and responsible communication, cautioning political leaders against making claims that could heighten anxiety or undermine confidence in national institutions without credible evidence.
The exchange follows recent public comments by Peter Obi expressing concerns over his personal safety, comments that have attracted widespread political reactions from opposition figures and government officials alike.
Political analysts say the development reflects the heightened political atmosphere as parties and prominent leaders position themselves ahead of future political activities. They stressed the importance of constructive engagement, urging all political actors to exercise restraint and avoid statements capable of escalating tensions.
Observers also called on security agencies to continue providing adequate protection for all citizens while ensuring that any reported threats to public figures are investigated professionally and transparently in accordance with the law.
Stakeholders maintain that preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions requires responsible political communication, adherence to the rule of law and a commitment by all parties to promote peace, tolerance and issue based political engagement.
