The Federal Government has announced plans to increase funding for cancer care and strengthen medical research efforts aimed at improving access to treatment across Nigeria.
The initiative, unveiled during the Best of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Africa Conference in Abuja, seeks to ease the financial burden on cancer patients and enhance the country’s healthcare system.
According to the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), additional support will be provided through existing health intervention funds to assist eligible and vulnerable patients in accessing cancer treatment and essential care services.
The government also revealed plans to encourage local production of cancer medicines and invest in research and innovation that could improve early diagnosis, treatment outcomes, and overall cancer management in the country.
Health experts have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant step toward addressing the growing cancer burden in Nigeria and ensuring that more patients receive timely and affordable treatment.
The renewed commitment is expected to strengthen cancer care delivery, promote medical research, and provide hope for thousands of Nigerians battling the disease.
