Governor Eno said the model farm is intended to serve purposes beyond food production. According to him, the facility has been designed as a centre for agricultural research, practical learning, and recreation, creating opportunities for agro-tourism alongside commercial farming. He noted that the project reflects the state’s commitment to building a modern agricultural sector capable of generating employment and supporting economic growth.
The announcement was made during an inspection of the facility, where the governor explained that the university would oversee the day-to-day management of the farm, while the Ministry of Agriculture would provide policy guidance and supervisory oversight. The arrangement is expected to combine academic expertise with government support to ensure the project’s long-term success.
The governor disclosed that the Ibom Model Farm, inspired by the Songhai agricultural model, will serve as a prototype for similar projects planned across Akwa Ibom’s three senatorial districts. Proposed locations include Ini Local Government Area and Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, where additional model farms are expected to strengthen agricultural production and improve food availability.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Offiong Offor, said the initiative is expected to promote food security while providing training opportunities for students, young farmers, and agricultural entrepreneurs. She added that the project would also contribute to human capacity development and expand the state’s agro-tourism potential.
Responding on behalf of the university, Vice-Chancellor Professor Otoabasi Akpan expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in the institution. He assured the state government that AKSU possesses the technical expertise and academic resources needed to manage the facility effectively and transform it into a centre of excellence for modern agricultural practices.
The handover forms part of the Akwa Ibom State Government’s broader agricultural development agenda, which seeks to boost local food production, encourage research-driven farming, and create sustainable opportunities within the agricultural value chain. By partnering with the university, the government aims to bridge the gap between academic research and practical farming while fostering innovation that can benefit farmers and agribusinesses across the state.
