The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has strengthened collaboration with licensed customs agents and other stakeholders to address persistent gridlock around the nation’s seaports, a move aimed at improving cargo evacuation, easing traffic congestion and enhancing trade efficiency.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to streamline port operations and remove logistical bottlenecks that have long affected the movement of goods, increased the cost of doing business and slowed supply chain activities.
Stakeholders at the engagement emphasised the need for greater coordination among port operators, transport unions, customs agents and government agencies to ensure the seamless movement of cargo from the ports to their final destinations.
The NPA said effective collaboration is essential to improving operational efficiency, reducing vessel turnaround time and enhancing the competitiveness of Nigeria’s ports. It also stressed the importance of compliance with traffic management protocols and the adoption of digital systems to improve cargo clearance processes.
Industry experts noted that recurring port congestion continues to impose significant costs on importers, exporters and logistics companies through delays, higher demurrage charges and increased transportation expenses. They argued that resolving the challenge would strengthen Nigeria’s position as a preferred maritime trade hub in West Africa.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to modernising port infrastructure and promoting reforms that support faster cargo handling, improved logistics and a more efficient maritime sector capable of supporting the country’s economic growth objectives.
Analysts believe sustained engagement with customs agents and other industry players will be critical to achieving lasting solutions to congestion around the ports. They added that investments in road infrastructure, rail connectivity and technology driven port operations will further improve cargo evacuation and reduce pressure on major port corridors.
As Nigeria seeks to expand non oil exports and strengthen regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area, stakeholders say eliminating port gridlock remains essential to improving the ease of doing business, lowering logistics costs and enhancing the efficiency of the nation’s maritime industry.
