The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country today, warning that heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding in vulnerable communities and disrupt transportation and other economic activities.
The agency advised residents, particularly those living in low lying and flood prone areas, to remain vigilant as moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in parts of the northern, central and southern regions. NiMet cautioned that strong winds associated with the storms could damage weak structures, reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.
According to the weather forecast, the anticipated rainfall may lead to flash floods, especially in urban centres with poor drainage systems, while slippery roads and waterlogged streets could increase travel time and disrupt commercial activities. The agency urged motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads and advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances before the onset of heavy rainfall to minimise the risk of electrical accidents.
Emergency management experts also called on state governments and relevant agencies to strengthen flood preparedness measures, including clearing drainage channels and sensitising communities to potential weather related hazards.
The forecast comes as Nigeria enters the peak of the rainy season, a period often associated with increased flooding in several states. Meteorological experts have warned that climate variability continues to heighten the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, underscoring the need for improved disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure.
Businesses, farmers and transport operators have also been advised to monitor weather updates and plan their activities accordingly to minimise disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
NiMet reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely weather information and urged the public to stay informed through official forecasts as rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected to persist in many parts of the country during the rainy season.
