The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially handed over the Interim National Control Centre responsible for managing the country’s electricity grid to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), marking a major milestone in the ongoing reform of Nigeria’s power sector.
The transfer is part of the implementation of the Electricity Act and the Federal Government’s broader efforts to restructure the electricity industry by separating system operations from transmission activities. The move is expected to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s national power grid.
With the handover, NISO assumes responsibility for the real time operation, monitoring and coordination of electricity generation, transmission scheduling and grid stability across the country. The organisation is expected to function as an independent system operator, ensuring that electricity is dispatched fairly and efficiently to distribution companies without bias.
Officials described the development as a significant step towards creating a more competitive and reliable electricity market. They noted that separating grid operations from transmission infrastructure aligns Nigeria’s power sector with international best practices and is expected to strengthen confidence among investors and industry stakeholders.
The Interim National Control Centre serves as the operational hub for the national grid, where electricity supply is monitored around the clock to ensure balance between power generation and demand. TCN assured stakeholders that the transition would be seamless and would not disrupt electricity supply across the country.
