The Kaduna State Government has commenced a ₦34 billion flood control project in Rigasa as part of efforts to address recurring flooding, protect lives and property, and improve infrastructure in one of the state’s densely populated communities.
The large scale intervention is designed to tackle the persistent flooding that has affected residents for years, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure during the rainy season. The project is expected to include the construction of drainage channels, erosion control measures and other flood management infrastructure aimed at reducing the risk of future disasters.
As part of preparations for the project, the state government has paid more than ₦2 billion in compensation to residents whose homes, businesses and properties are affected by the development. Officials said the compensation is intended to ensure that those displaced by the project receive adequate support in line with legal and humanitarian requirements.
Speaking during the project’s inauguration, government officials described the initiative as a major investment in public safety and urban development. They noted that the project forms part of the state’s broader strategy to build resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding the growing impact of climate change and extreme weather events.
According to the government, the flood control project will not only reduce the risk of annual flooding but also improve road access, sanitation and environmental conditions within Rigasa and neighbouring communities. Authorities expressed confidence that the project would enhance economic activities by creating a safer environment for residents and businesses.
Many residents welcomed the commencement of the project, describing it as a long awaited intervention. While some acknowledged the inconvenience associated with relocation, they expressed optimism that the compensation provided by the government would ease the transition and enable affected families to rebuild their lives.
Environmental and urban planning experts have also commended the initiative, noting that investments in flood control infrastructure are becoming increasingly necessary as rapid urbanisation and changing weather patterns continue to heighten flood risks across many Nigerian cities.
The Kaduna State Government reaffirmed its commitment to completing the project on schedule and ensuring transparency throughout its implementation. Officials also appealed to residents to cooperate with contractors and relevant agencies to facilitate smooth execution of the work.
When completed, the ₦34 billion flood control project is expected to significantly reduce flooding in Rigasa, improve public safety and strengthen Kaduna State’s efforts to build sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting long term economic and social development.
