The Federal Government has summoned the Ambassador of Côte d’Ivoire to Nigeria following the death of a Nigerian citizen in a prison in Abidjan, describing the incident as a matter of serious concern that requires a transparent and comprehensive investigation.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called in the Ivorian envoy to seek an official explanation regarding the circumstances surrounding the citizen’s death while in custody. During the meeting, government officials demanded detailed information on the events leading to the incident, the medical care provided to the deceased and the measures being taken by Ivorian authorities to establish the cause of death.
According to the ministry, Nigeria expects a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation that will clarify what transpired and ensure accountability where necessary. The government also stressed the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians residing or detained abroad in accordance with international law and diplomatic conventions.
