The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has called for renewed focus on food security, urging governments, private sector stakeholders and development partners to adopt coordinated strategies that will boost agricultural productivity and ensure sustainable access to food across the country.
The group said strengthening food security is essential to addressing rising food inflation, improving livelihoods and supporting Nigeria’s long term economic growth. It noted that increasing investment in agriculture and strengthening food supply chains are critical to achieving these objectives.
According to the NESG, Nigeria possesses significant agricultural potential, but persistent challenges such as insecurity, climate change, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to finance and post harvest losses continue to constrain food production. Addressing these issues, the group said, will require sustained policy implementation and stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors.
The organisation urged policymakers to expand investment in irrigation, rural roads, storage facilities, agricultural research and modern farming technologies to improve productivity and reduce losses along the agricultural value chain. It also emphasised the importance of supporting smallholder farmers with improved access to quality inputs, credit facilities and extension services.
The NESG further stressed the need to create a stable policy environment that encourages private sector investment in agriculture, agro processing and food distribution. It noted that increased investment would strengthen domestic food production, reduce dependence on imports and improve the resilience of Nigeria’s food system.
Industry experts believe improving food security would have far reaching economic benefits, including moderating inflation, creating employment opportunities and enhancing rural development. They also observed that a more productive agricultural sector would strengthen food availability while contributing to increased exports and foreign exchange earnings.
The group called for stronger partnerships among federal and state governments, financial institutions, agribusinesses and development organisations to mobilise resources and implement practical solutions that address the country’s food security challenges.
The NESG reaffirmed that achieving sustainable food security requires long term commitment, policy consistency and continuous investment in agricultural innovation. It expressed confidence that with the right reforms and strategic investments, Nigeria can build a more resilient agricultural sector capable of meeting the food needs of its growing population.
Stakeholders say placing food security at the centre of national economic planning will not only improve the welfare of citizens but also strengthen economic stability, reduce poverty and support inclusive growth across the country.
