IHS Nigeria, in partnership with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration, has distributed 10,000 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders to residents of the nation’s capital in a major effort to promote the adoption of clean cooking energy and improve household access to safer and more environmentally friendly fuel.
The initiative forms part of a broader campaign to accelerate the transition from traditional cooking methods such as firewood and kerosene to cleaner energy sources, while contributing to the Federal Government’s objectives of expanding energy access, protecting the environment and improving public health.
The distribution exercise targeted households across communities within the FCT, particularly low-income families that often rely on biomass fuels for cooking. By providing LPG cylinders, the programme seeks to reduce the financial barriers associated with adopting clean cooking technologies and encourage more families to embrace safer and more efficient energy solutions.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony, officials described the programme as a strategic intervention designed to improve the quality of life for residents while addressing the environmental and health challenges associated with the use of firewood, charcoal and kerosene.
They noted that millions of Nigerian households continue to depend on traditional cooking fuels despite the availability of cleaner alternatives.
