The German Football Association (DFB) has announced plans to open talks with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp after Julian Nagelsmann stepped down as head coach of the national team in the aftermath of Germany’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
Nagelsmann requested to be relieved of his duties following Germany’s shock elimination in the Round of 32, where the four time world champions suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay. The DFB accepted his resignation with immediate effect, bringing an end to his tenure that began in 2023.
In an official statement, the German football governing body thanked Nagelsmann for his commitment and professionalism during his time in charge. The federation also confirmed that it will begin discussions with Klopp, revealing that the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager has already indicated a general willingness to consider the position.
Nagelsmann admitted that the decision to resign was difficult but believed the national team needed a fresh start after another disappointing World Cup campaign.
“I’ve done a lot of thinking since our elimination. My priority has always been the success of the team, and after such a bitter disappointment, they deserve a new beginning,” he said.
Germany’s latest World Cup exit has intensified pressure on the national team, marking another major tournament disappointment following early eliminations in previous editions. The DFB hopes that appointing Klopp could restore confidence and return the team to competing for major honours.
Klopp, widely regarded as one of Germany’s most successful modern coaches, enjoyed remarkable spells with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, winning domestic league titles, the UEFA Champions League and several major trophies. Since leaving Liverpool, he has remained away from frontline coaching, making him one of the most sought after managerial candidates in international football.
Although no agreement has been reached, reports suggest both parties are expected to begin formal negotiations in the coming days. Should the discussions prove successful, Klopp would take charge of the German national team ahead of upcoming international competitions and begin the task of rebuilding one of football’s most decorated nations.
