The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to position Nigeria as a preferred destination for technology manufacturing by offering a range of incentives aimed at attracting global technology companies.
As part of the initiative, investors willing to establish production facilities in the country will benefit from tax incentives, import duty waivers on manufacturing equipment, and other business-friendly policies designed to reduce operating costs.
The government says the move is part of its broader strategy to expand local manufacturing, reduce dependence on imported technology products, and encourage more companies to produce within Nigeria.
Officials believe that attracting major technology manufacturers will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, promote skills development, facilitate technology transfer, and strengthen the country’s industrial capacity.
The policy is also expected to help conserve foreign exchange by reducing imports while increasing the production of locally manufactured technology products for both domestic consumption and export to regional markets.
Industry experts have described the incentives as a positive step but stressed that tax relief alone may not be enough. They argue that sustained investment in electricity, transportation infrastructure, security, and regulatory consistency will be essential if Nigeria is to compete successfully with other manufacturing destinations.
Stakeholders further note that a predictable business environment, efficient ports, and clear government policies will play a significant role in convincing multinational technology firms to establish long-term operations in the country.
If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to boost industrialization, diversify the economy beyond oil, strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, and enhance the country’s position as a technology production hub in Africa.
