The Commissioner of the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration, Dr. Filister Musa Irarimam, has reiterated the state government’s commitment towards promoting the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
She stated this during an event to commemorate this year’s International White Cane Day held at the Hope Afresh Foundation in Jalingo.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Filister Irarimam said the celebration highlights the need to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities and ensure that individuals with visual impairment live equitable and fulfilling lives.
The commissioner acknowledged the progress made in advancing inclusivity and empowering visually impaired persons, particularly the Disability Bill, which has passed second reading at the Taraba State House of Assembly.
She described the development as a major milestone towards safeguarding the rights of persons living with disabilities.
Dr. Filister Irarimam disclosed that the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration has partnered with Taraba State University on the development of a specialised curriculum for persons living with disabilities.
She also appealed to the government to provide educational scholarships for persons with disabilities.
Delivering a goodwill message, the Chairman of the House Committee on Social Justice and Reintegration, Anas Shaibu, encouraged collaboration and solidarity among organisations and individuals in creating an inclusive and supportive environment.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Taraba State Chapter, Wanderimam Teyang, appreciated Governor Agbu Kefas for introducing policies that consider the needs of persons with disabilities.
He, however, called on the Taraba State Government to create employment opportunities for blind persons and renovate the Government Workshop for the Blind in Jalingo, a centre for training visually impaired individuals in crafts and vocational skills.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of white canes donated by Dr. Agbu Kefas, a craft exhibition by blind persons, and the presentation of Braille Bibles by the Bible Society of Nigeria, Taraba State Chapter.
