The Taraba State Government has presented a cheque of over N1 billion to cover the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) registration fees for final year students in public schools across the state.
Disbursed through the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the funding also covers feeding, transportation, and other related expenses for exchange students currently studying across 19 northern states.
Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, said the payment would cover the examination expenses of 39,536 students across the state.
The commissioner emphasized that the governor’s gesture is aimed at easing the financial burden on parents and guardians amid the country’s current socio economic challenges.
Dr. Augustina Godwin said this is the third consecutive year the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas has funded free enrollment for external examinations.
She noted that the initiative is part of the administration’s broader commitment to repositioning the education sector for improved performance.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the examination body, the WAEC Controller for Taraba State, Ogundele Agunbiade, commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his commitment to transforming education in the state.
He also praised the state government for its continued logistical support, including the recent provision of utility vehicles to the council.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Idris Goje, highlighted several ongoing interventions aimed at improving educational infrastructure and raising academic standards across the state.
The ceremony was attended by directors of the ministry and other key stakeholders in the education sector.
