The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has opposed proposals that could limit or reduce airline ticket sales, warning that such measures may negatively affect the growth and stability of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The aviation regulator said any policy capable of restricting ticket sales or disrupting normal commercial operations should be carefully reviewed to avoid unintended consequences for airlines, passengers and the wider economy. It stressed that maintaining a competitive and efficient aviation market remains essential for the sector’s long term sustainability.
According to the NCAA, unrestricted ticket sales play a critical role in ensuring airlines generate the revenue needed to sustain operations, invest in fleet maintenance and improve service delivery. The authority noted that unnecessary limitations could weaken the financial position of carriers already contending with rising operational costs, foreign exchange challenges and high aviation fuel prices.
The regulator also emphasised the importance of protecting consumer interests by ensuring that ticketing policies remain transparent, fair and consistent with international aviation standards. It said passengers should continue to enjoy convenient access to ticket purchases through multiple sales channels, including online platforms, travel agencies and airline offices.
Industry stakeholders echoed the NCAA’s position, arguing that any reduction in ticket sales opportunities could reduce competition, limit consumer choice and discourage investment in the aviation sector. They added that airlines require stable and predictable revenue streams to expand routes, improve connectivity and enhance the overall travel experience.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to working with airlines, travel operators and other stakeholders to develop policies that strengthen the aviation industry while safeguarding passenger rights. It encouraged continued dialogue among industry participants to address emerging challenges without undermining commercial activities.
Analysts observed that Nigeria’s aviation sector is gradually recovering from recent economic pressures and that sustaining this momentum will require supportive regulatory policies, infrastructure improvements and stronger collaboration between government agencies and industry operators.
