The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of elderly residents through programmes designed to enhance their health, dignity, and quality of life.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mrs. Ruby Emele, gave the assurance during the maiden town hall meeting and free medical outreach organised by the Better Life for Aged Men Foundation (BLAMF) for persons aged 60 and above in Orji, Owerri North Local Government Area.
The commissioner said the initiative aligns with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s Shared Prosperity 3R agenda and pledged the state’s partnership with the foundation to expand programmes that support senior citizens across communities.
Also speaking, officials of the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency pledged continued collaboration with the foundation to improve access to healthcare for the elderly through sustainable community-based interventions.
Executive Director of BLAMF, Ambassador Jerry Osuji, said the foundation was established to address loneliness, neglect, and social isolation among older persons, adding that the outreach combined free medical services, advocacy, and social support for senior citizens.
The programme featured medical consultations, health screenings, distribution of prescription drugs, and other support services for beneficiaries, while community leaders and the Nigerian Union of Pensioners called for greater inclusion of elderly citizens in government and private-sector empowerment programmes.
