More than 700,000 smallholder farmers across Nasarawa, Niger, and Bauchi states are set to benefit from the distribution of approximately 21 million tree seedlings under an agroforestry initiative aimed at tackling climate change, improving soil health, and strengthening rural livelihoods.
The programme, implemented by One Acre Fund Nigeria, forms part of a broader effort to promote sustainable farming practices while helping communities adapt to the growing effects of climate change. The organisation said the initiative will provide farmers with quality tree seedlings that can improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and create additional sources of income through timber, fruit, and other tree-based products.
According to the organisation, the distribution is expected to reach over 700,000 farmers during the planting season, with millions of seedlings allocated to participating communities across the three states. The project seeks to encourage farmers to integrate trees into their farmlands, a practice that enhances agricultural productivity while contributing to environmental conservation.
Officials explained that the initiative is designed to address challenges such as declining soil nutrients, irregular rainfall, and land degradation, which have continued to affect agricultural production across many parts of northern Nigeria. By planting and nurturing the seedlings, farmers are expected to improve the resilience of their farms and secure long-term environmental and economic benefits.
The programme also supports Nigeria’s broader climate action and reforestation goals by increasing tree cover in vulnerable farming communities. Beyond environmental gains, beneficiaries are expected to enjoy improved crop yields and diversified income opportunities as the trees mature.
Agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing agroforestry as an effective strategy for combating climate change while enhancing food security. They encouraged beneficiaries to plant and properly maintain the seedlings to maximize their economic and ecological value.
The tree distribution initiative reflects the growing collaboration between development organisations and government agencies to promote sustainable agriculture and build resilience among smallholder farmers.
