Kano State has emerged as Nigeria’s best performing state in enrolment under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for the first quarter of 2026.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the achievement was announced in a statement issued in Kano by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), Aminu Ahmad Turaki.

Turaki said the NHIA BHCPF Gateway Q1 2026 Enrolment Report showed that Kano enrolled 327,410 beneficiaries, surpassing its target of 216,775 to rank first among all states.

He attributed the performance to the Kano State Government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable and underserved residents.

The agency also credited its Executive Secretary, Dr Rahila Aliyu Mukhtar, for spearheading reforms, strengthening community mobilisation, promoting stakeholder engagement and expanding health insurance coverage across the state.

According to the statement, the achievement reflects the agency’s people centred policies, strategic partnerships and data driven implementation, which have strengthened healthcare financing and advanced the state’s drive towards Universal Health Coverage.

KSCHMA expressed appreciation to the NHIA, the Federal Ministry of Health, healthcare providers, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, community based organisations and other stakeholders for their continued support.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to increasing enrolment, improving healthcare service delivery and ensuring equitable access to affordable and quality healthcare for all residents of Kano State.
