THE HAGUE Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reaffirmed that Greenland is “not for sale”, saying Denmark is fully prepared to defend its territory following renewed comments by U.S. President Donald Trump about bringing the Arctic island under American control.
Frederiksen’s remarks came after Trump once again stated that he wanted the United States to control Greenland, arguing that the autonomous Danish territory is strategically important to U.S. national security.
“The U.S. position is unfortunately very clear on this topic, and our position is as clear as it has been all through,” Frederiksen said ahead of the NATO summit.
“Greenland is, of course, not for sale.”
Denmark Reaffirms NATO Commitment
The Danish prime minister also emphasized Denmark’s commitment to Article Five, NATO’s collective defense principle, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all alliance members.
“If anything happens to one of us, then everybody should stand up for each other,” Frederiksen said.
She added:
“We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory.”
Frederiksen’s comments underscore Denmark’s firm rejection of any suggestion that Greenland’s sovereignty could be negotiated, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to NATO’s collective security obligations.
