The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on state governors across the country to adopt transparent and fair compensation practices when acquiring land for public infrastructure projects. The group cited the recent actions of Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani as a model for balancing development with the protection of citizens’ property rights.
In a statement, HURIWA commended the Kaduna State Government for compensating residents whose properties were affected by the ongoing 15-kilometre Ring Road project extending from Danbushiya Junction to Danhono 2 Junction in Millennium City. According to the association, the payment of compensation demonstrates respect for the provisions of the Land Use Act and reflects a commitment to due process in land acquisition.
The rights group noted that infrastructure development is essential for economic growth, but stressed that governments must ensure affected communities are treated fairly. It argued that prompt and adequate compensation helps reduce disputes, builds public confidence, and encourages cooperation between authorities and local residents.
HURIWA further urged other state governments to emulate Kaduna’s approach by engaging with communities before commencing major projects and ensuring that compensation is paid without unnecessary delays. The organization said transparent implementation of land acquisition policies would help prevent litigation and social unrest while accelerating development initiatives.
The association also encouraged governments to strengthen accountability in the administration of land matters, emphasizing that respect for citizens’ rights should remain a priority even as states pursue ambitious infrastructure programmes.
The Kaduna Ring Road project is expected to improve transportation, ease traffic congestion, and support economic activities within the Millennium City axis and surrounding communities. As construction progresses, stakeholders say continued adherence to legal and constitutional provisions governing land acquisition will be essential in sustaining public trust and ensuring that development benefits both the government and affected residents.
