At least 11 people have been killed and 46 others injured, including five children, after Russia launched another large scale missile attack on Kyiv, marking the second major assault on the Ukrainian capital within a week.
According to Kyiv’s military administration, three additional people were killed elsewhere in the wider Kyiv region, while emergency crews continue rescue operations at more than 20 locations across the city.
Residential Buildings Among Targets
Kyiv’s military administrator, Timur Tkachenko, said several residential high rise buildings were struck during the overnight attack, causing extensive destruction.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that Russian ballistic missiles hit multiple parts of the capital, sparking fires in apartment buildings, warehouses and a vehicle repair workshop.
By Monday morning, the scale of the damage had become clear, with three large apartment blocks partially collapsing after being directly hit by missiles.
Emergency workers are continuing to search through the rubble for survivors believed to be trapped beneath the debris, while helicopters have been transporting water from the nearby river to help firefighters extinguish multiple blazes across the city.
Another Night of Fear for Kyiv Residents
The attack forced thousands of Kyiv residents to spend the night in underground shelters as explosions echoed across the city and Ukraine’s air defense systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles.
Residents reported hearing repeated blasts throughout the night as ballistic missiles struck several districts.
The latest assault came just days after another devastating Russian attack that killed 30 people in Kyiv.
Zelensky Had Warned of New Attack
Hours before the strikes began, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that intelligence reports indicated Russia was preparing another massive attack on the capital.
Following Thursday’s deadly barrage of drones and missiles, tens of thousands of residents had already sought refuge in Kyiv’s metro stations as air raid sirens sounded across the city.
Ukraine accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian neighborhoods during that earlier attack.
Moscow, however, said it had struck military and energy facilities in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian power stations and energy infrastructure.
Fighting Continues Beyond Kyiv
Overnight attacks also affected Sevastopol in Russian occupied Crimea, where power supplies were temporarily disrupted.
Ukraine has intensified strikes against military and infrastructure targets in Crimea as part of its effort to pressure the Kremlin into peace negotiations.
Despite those operations, Russia has continued to escalate its missile attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
NATO Summit Looms
The latest strike comes on the eve of the NATO summit in Turkey, where President Zelensky is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss Ukraine’s defense needs.
Ahead of the meeting, Zelensky again appealed to Ukraine’s allies to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
Writing on X, he warned:
“Any delay with missiles for our air defense means the loss of lives, and it encourages Russia to continue the war.”
The Ukrainian leader has also urged the United States to grant Ukraine licenses to manufacture Patriot air defense missiles domestically, arguing that expanding local production would strengthen the country’s ability to defend itself against continued Russian attacks.
As rescue operations continue in Kyiv, officials fear the death toll could rise as emergency teams search the collapsed buildings for survivors.
