Cape Verde has made football history by becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Representing an archipelago of ten islands in the Atlantic Ocean with a population of just over 525,000, the Blue Sharks have captured the imagination of football fans around the world. Their reward is a blockbuster knockout clash against defending champions Argentina.

Cape Verde secured their place in the last 16 after playing out a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia. Moments after the final whistle, players gathered around a mobile phone on the pitch to watch the closing minutes of Spain’s victory over Uruguay a result that confirmed they had finished second in Group H.

The emotional scenes that followed reflected the magnitude of the achievement.

“Tears of pride and joy all over the stands,” BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Rob Law said from Houston.

“There was a beautiful moment when they were all huddled around their phones, waiting for the final whistle. When it sounded, tears flowed on the pitch and in the stands as well. What a moment. It’s the highlight of this World Cup so far.”

Cape Verde’s remarkable campaign began with a stunning goalless draw against Spain, where 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a heroic performance to keep the European giants at bay. They followed that with an impressive 2-2 draw against two-time world champions Uruguay before holding Saudi Arabia to secure qualification.

Former Spain World Cup winner Juan Mata praised the team’s consistency throughout the tournament.

“What they are doing is incredible. It wasn’t just one game against Spain it’s three outstanding performances at the highest level,” Mata told ITV.

Cape Verde’s journey is one of the greatest underdog stories of the tournament. Despite having one of the smallest populations of any nation at the World Cup, they finished ahead of five-time African champions Cameroon to reach the knockout stage.

Now, with a historic meeting against Argentina awaiting, Cape Verde stands just one match away from extending one of the most inspiring stories in World Cup history.
